How do I open the stuck plastic stopper of a wide neck ground glass reagent bottle?

(its brand new!)

First off, you could send it back if it’s brand new. First, though, try warming it. Hot water is often good enough. You might then be able to get it loose (does depend somewhat on the reagent you’re dealing with… I wouldn’t try it with something really reactive). Often a few gentle taps can free up a stuck stopper, too… be careful, though, you need to hit it hard enough to make a difference, but not so hard as you break it.
