Beginner Filly
Should I train a filly or buy a horse?

I can get 2 horses. My family was planning on getting one for my friends and them to ride (beginners) and a show one for me. BUT what if I get a filly and train her myself and my show horse? A calmer show horse so people can ride him and a filly I raise myself to show. I found the perfect TB/Oldenburg filly. Wouldn’t it build trust and I wouldn’t have to wonder if someone trained him/her poorly and deal with the bad habits. I have experience in training just not my own.
Update: I have decided to get a filly. I have decided which one too but I’m going to change her name. Any suggestions for training and names?

I would be very wary of training your own horse. I’m guessing you’re still young, since you live with your family. If you want to train your own horse, then just make sure you have professional help at hand should you need it. Now remember, if you get a weanling foal, she will not be ready to even begin training under the saddle for a few years, and it will be more until she’s completely reliable as a riding horse.

As a sidenote however, if you’re dead-set on training your own horse, you ought to look into adopting a mustang from the Bureau of Land Management. Here’s their website: https://www.blm.gov/adoptahorse/index.php They hold adoptions all over the country, and even right now there is an internet adoption. Horses can be adopted for as little as $125. And there are many successful mustang show-horses. Of course this would be more difficult than raising a foal…
